Egypt: The Hanging Church (Cairo)

This was actually kind of interesting too . . . although the major religion in Egypt is Islam, there is actually a large minority of Christians in Egypt (about 20%). What's more interesting is that the branch of Christianity that they belong to is not Protestantism or Catholocism, but Coptic. It's a branch of Christianity that is more related to the Orthodox Churches in the East - like Russian or Turkish.

Needless to say, there is a strong tradition of Coptic Christianity in Cairo, and there are many old Churches there. One of the ones we went to is called the Hanging Church or El Muallaqa. It was the youngest old building that we saw - most experts think it was built around the 700's. The reason they call it the Hanging Church is because it is suspended over an old Roman Fortress Tower, which you can see by looking through a window on the floor.
