Egypt: The Language
Believe it or not - the national language of Egypt is not English - instead it's arabic. There are many words in the english language today that came from Arabic (like sugar, algebra, and cotton), but for the most part, I didn't understand a single word of it. Thank goodness our guides spoke really good english. Also different than most of the languages that I've seen/heard so far (french, german, italian) - arabic has its own alphabet. So it was really hard to just read a billboard sign, since you couldn't even recognize the letters. Even the numbers are written differently.
Another interesting difference we found in Egypt was that one of their major forms of art is calligraphy, which is basically a beautiful way to write words.
